Manage your domains

A domain represents a thematic within an organization that allows data to be grouped together. For example, a domain can represent “Finance”, “Human resources”, “Logistics” or more specific areas within the organization.

An example in a hospital a domain can be defined as “Pediatric”, “Pathology”, “Biobank”, etc. A domain can contain several applications associated with this thematic of data.


A domain is the top level of the hierarchy in sidecar

A domain can be enriched with the following information:

  • Name : the name of the domain will be displayed in most of the screens. For a better user experience, it's important to choose an explicit name that is self-explanatory and not too long. The maximum number of characters for the name is 100,

  • Description: You can provide here a very detailled description of the domain, this text box is limited to 8000 characters.

  • Code: A code can be defined as having functional identifier for your domain . The code is limited to 50 characters.

  • Stakeholders: Two stakeholders can be specified for a domain.

    • A sponsor, is for example, the person who represents this domain in the institution.

    • A subject matter expert is the person that has extensive functional knowledge and expertise on the topic.

  • Status: Four types of status are available

    • Active: the domain is currently in use.

    • Draft: the domain is visible in sidecar but indicates to the users that the information associated is currently being reviewed or worked on.

    • Deprecated: the domain is visible in sidecar but indicates to the users that this domain and all its applications, data assets, etc.. are not used any longer in the institution.

    • Hidden : the domain is not visible by business users.

Tip: A complete description of every field is available in sidecar, just search for the application "sidecar" and you will have all definitions, data types and the length of each field.

Create a domain

To create a new domain simply click on the "plus" sign and then complete the necessary information.

Note: The "plus" sign is not available if you are inside an existing domain, you need to be at the domain list level.

Modify a domain

When a domain is modified, there will be no impact on the applications associated to it, the links will remain.

Delete a domain

If a domain is no longer relevant or you have created a domain by mistake, you can always delete this domain.

In the Domain detail view, simply click on the delete icon (garbage).

The domain will be deleted with all the applications, data assets and their attributes.


Restore a domain

If you need to restore a deleted domain, please contact your sidecar administrator.
