Manage your applications

An application in sidecar has the same definition as a software. This is an IT solution, an application, an app used by the organization.

Each application is associated with a domain. A domain can contain more than one application. For example under the domain "Biobank" we can regroup all applications related to laboratory information management. An application allows you to group data assets.

An application could also be defined as an external institution, third party tool, etc. For example, "Johns Hopkins Medicine" can be defined as an application and all datasets such as COVID-19 Data files (data assets) from their database are associated to it.

An application is the second level of the hierarchy in sidecar

An application can be enriched with the following information:

  • Name : the name of the application will be displayed in most of the screens. For a better user experience, it's important to choose an explicit name that is self-explanatory and not too long. The maximum number of characters for the name is 100,

  • Description: You can provide a very detailed description of the application, this text box is limited to 8000 characters.

  • Code: A code can be defined to have a functional identifier for your application. The code is limited to 50 characters.

  • Stakeholders: Three stakeholders can be specified for an application.

    • A business owner is the person who is in charge of the business aspects of the application in the institution.

    • An ICT owner is the personne who is in charge of the technical aspects of the application in the institution.

    • A subject matter expert is the person that has extensive functional knowledge and expertise on the topic.

  • Status: Four types of status are available

    • Active: the application is currently in use.

    • Draft: the application is visible in sidecar but indicates to the users that the information associated is currently being reviewed or worked on.

    • Deprecated: the application is visible in sidecar but indicates to the users that this application and all its data assets & attributes are not used any longer in the institution.

    • Hidden : the application is not visible by business users

Tip: A complete description of every field is available in sidecar, just search for the application "sidecar" and you will have all the definitions, the data types and the length of each field.

Create an aplication

To create a new application simply click on the "plus" sign and then complete the necessary information.

Note: The "plus" sign is not available if you are inside an existing application, you need to be at the application list level.

Modify an application

When an application is modified, there will be no impact on the data assets or attributes associated, the links will remain.

Delete an application

If an application is no longer relevant or you have created an application by mistake, you can always delete this application.

In the Application detail view, simply click on the delete icon (garbage).

The application will be deleted with all the data assets and their attributes.

Restore an application

If you need to restore a deleted application, please contact your sidecar administrator.
